Eurosedlar och euromynt infördes den 1 januari 2002 och har blivit en tydlig symbol för europeisk integration. De används varje dag i 19 EU-länder och gör handel och resande enklare. Kontantbetalningar görs nu i samma valuta av 338 miljoner människor.

Hur våra pengar utvecklades

Maastrichtfördraget från 1992 ledde till upprättandet av Europeiska unionen och den gemensamma valutan, euron. Efter år av planering och förberedelser infördes eurosedlar och euromynt i tolv EU-stater den 1 januari 2002. Totalt 19 EU-länder har hittills antagit euron.

Alla EU-länder – förutom Danmark och Strobritannien, som har en opt-out-klasul – förväntas gå med i den monetära unionen och införa euron så snart de uppfyller konvergenskriterierna.

Införandet av den andra serien eurosedlar 2013 är en del av den kontinuerliga utvecklingen av eurosedlar. Den andra serien innehåller avancerade säkerhetsdetaljer för att säkerställa att euron förblir ett pålitligt betalningsmedel.



  • 1 januari 2002: Eurosedlar och euromynt införs i 12 EU-länder: Belgien, Finland, Frankrike, Grekland, Irland, Italien, Luxemburg, Nederländerna, Portugal, Spanien och Österrike.
  • 1 januari 2007: Slovenien inför euron.
  • 1 januari 2008: Cypern och Malta inför euron.
  • 1 januari 2009: Slovakien inför euron.
  • 1 januari 2011: Estland inför euron.
  • 8 november 2012: ECB meddelar att den andra serien eurosedlar, den s.k. Europa-serien lanseras och börjar med 5‑eurosedeln och presenterar bilder på tre nya säkerhetsdetaljer.
  • 10 januari 2013: 5-eurosedeln i den andra serien presenteras.
  • 2 maj 2013: De nya 5‑eurosedlarna införs i euroområdet.
  • 1 januari 2014: Lettland inför euron.
  • 13 januari 2014: Den nya 10-eurosedeln i Europaserien presenteras.
  • 23 september 2014: Den nya 10-eurosedeln införs i euroområdet.
  • 1 januari 2015: Litauen inför euron.
  • 24 februari 2015: Den nya 20-eurosedeln i Europaserien presenteras.
  • 25 november 2015: Den nya 20-eurosedeln införs i euroområdet.
  • 5 juli 2016: Den nya 50-eurosedeln i Europaserien presenteras.
  • 4 april 2017: Den nya 50-eurosedeln införs i euroområdet.

ECB:s roll

Europeiska centralbanken i Frankfurt am Main har ansvar för penningpolitiken i euroområdet och exklusiv rätt att bevilja utgivning av sedlar i euroområdet. ECB utför dessa uppgifter tillsammans med den nationella centralbankerna i euroländerna.

7. We understand that stocks of ECB materials for distribution are limited. We will inform the ECB of the number of copies distributed, the means of distribution as well as the target groups.
On behalf of the company/institution mentioned above, we declare that we will refrain from using any materials either in printed or electronic form provided by the ECB until our membership of the Partnership Programme has been confirmed.
We will be liable for any damages incurred by the ECB should we not act in accordance with this Letter of Intent. We also understand that the ECB reserves the right to terminate our membership at any time.
