Idag sattes euron i omlopp i Litauen. Därmed använder 19 av Europeiska unionens medlemsstater den gemensamma europeiska valutan, tillkännagav Europeiska centralbanken (ECB).

"Å ECB-rådets vägnar välkomnar jag utvidgningen av euroområdet. Litauen har vidtagit exceptionella åtgärder i svåra tider för att uppnå målet att anta den gemensamma valutan”, sade Mario Draghi, ECB:s ordförande.

Lietuvos bankas, Litauens centralbank, blir medlem i Eurosystemet, euroområdets centralbankssystem, som består av ECB och 19 nationella centralbanker. Litauen går också med i den gemensamma tillsynsmekanismen, genom vilken större banker faller under ECB:s tillsyn. Tre litauiska banker (SEB bankas, Swedbank och DNB bankas) står under direkt tillsyn av ECB. De har redan genomgått den samlade bedömningen, en finansiell kontroll av 130 banker i euroområdet.

Lietuvos bankas har betalat återstoden av sin andel av ECB:s kapital och överfört detta belopp till ECB:s valutareserv. Vid publiceringen av euroområdets likviditetsbehov och riktmärket för tilldelningsbeloppet den 30 december 2014 hade det redan beaktats att de litauiska monetära finansinstituten integreras i euroområdets banksystem den 1 januari 2015. Litauiska motparter i Eurosystemet kommer att kunna delta i ECB:s öppna marknadsoperationer som offentliggörs efter den 1 januari 2015.

Listan över de banker och andra monetära finansinstitut i Litauen som omfattas av kassakrav kommer inom kort att offentliggöras på ECB:s webbplats, liksom även listorna över de monetära finansinstituten i övriga EU-medlemsstater som har infört euron. Övergångsvis fastställdes en uppfyllandeperiod från den 1 januari till den 27 januari 2015 för införande av kassakrav för litauiska monetära finansinstitut. Listan över de tillgångar i Litauen som godtas som säkerheter för Eurosystemets kredittransaktioner har också inkluderats i listan över euroområdets godtagbara tillgångar, vilken finns på ECB:s webbplats.

Litauens tillträde till euroområdet som 19:e medlem innebär också att det nya systemet med roterande rösträtter i ECB-rådet träder i kraft idag. På ECB:s webbplats ges en ingående förklaring av det här systemet och en kalender visar hur rösträtterna kommer att rotera under 2015 och 2016.
